Huge clashes set in 8-man ranks

The top two teams in Class B the previous two years have resided in the same district. And that’s the case again in 2014, with Laverne and Pond Creek-Hunter set for a critical midseason test not just for district position but to solidify as the No. 1 team in Class B.

Last year, Laverne knocked off PCH 40-6 in the regular season and 42-12 on the way to its second straight state championship. They also beat PCH for the 2012 championship as well.

Also big this week in the 8-man ranks is a showdown between Cherokee and Shattuck. Cherokee is the regining Class C champion but Shattuck has been the top team overall in the class in the past decade.

East squads flex muscle, OCS keeps rolling

Owasso and Tulsa Union came to the OKC area to face a strong Norman North team and an undefeated Putnam City North squad, respectively.

And they had enjoyable rides home, after the Rams jumped out to a 28-0 lead and rolled 45-20, while Union pummeled the Panthers 63-6.

In Class 6A-I, Mustang scored a big win at Edmond North, 34-20, while unbeaten Westmoore barely stayed that way, with Norman pushing the Jaguars to overtime before Westmoore picked up a 34-28 triumph. Also getting a big win was Edmond Memorial, which held off Edmond Santa Fe 40-33.

Also scoring one of the biggest wins of the week was Oklahoma Christian School, which took down Millwood 30-12.

Southwest football roundup and look ahead

The showdown between top-five 8-man powers in Tipton and Grandfield turned into an easy night for Tipton, which jumped out with several quick touchdowns and picked up a 42-8 victory.

Other solid victories came from Newcastle (26-11 at Cache), Duncan (34-13 over Chickasha), Apache (59-12 against Mangum) and 55-point beatdowns by Lawton High (against PC West) and Lawton MacArthur (against NW Classen).

This week’s big games

Lawton Mac at Altus

The Bulldogs’ only loss came to 4A No. 1 Anadarko, and they could take a huge step forward in the district chase with an upset win. At 4-0, Mac is looking like it could be the team to beat in the 5A race this year.

Lawton High at Enid

The Plainsmen have had some good moments this year in a 2-2 start (two losses by 5 total points) but the competition level steps up against a Lawton squad in the conversation to win it all in 6A-II. LHS has three blowouts and a close loss to Lawton Mac.

Woodward at Newcastle

The Boomers travel south to take on a Newcastle team off to a strong start. These squads play in a rugged district that also includes No. 1 Anadarko and Clinton, so this is a critical contest for district positioning.

Class 6AII-1 recap

The opening week of class 6AII-1 action provided a mixed bag of results.  The most thrilling contest saw Sand Springs rally for a 28-27 win against Bartlesville.

The Sandites trailed 27-7 in the third quarter but chipped away.  Connor Sitton scored on a 1-yard run and Blake Boyles added the extra point for the game winner with 48 seconds left.

Booker T. Washington registered its third consecutive shutout with a 26-0 victory over Ponca City.  Cordale Grundy had three touchdown passes for the Hornets.

Muskogee won its first game of the season, 26-7 over Sapulpa.  The Chieftains tied the game early in the third quarter.  The Roughers, however, returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and did not look back.

Bixby overcame a slow start in cruising past Claremore 47-6.  The game was tied 3-3 after the first quarter.  The Spartans, however, exploded for 30 points in the second.

Bixby quarterback Tanner Griffin led the charge as he passed for 353 yards with four touchdowns.

Several good battles on tap to start district play

There will be three solid contests in three different classes as district play opens Friday night.

Claremore travels to Bixby in a key 6AII-1 matchup.  Bixby has scored 95 points the past two weeks after a season opening loss at Jenks.

Claremore, on the other hand, has struggled on offense.  The Zebras have scored just 27 points in three games.

Collinsville opens district 5A-4 play with a tough road contest at Coweta.

The Cardinals opened with a pair of wins before dropping a 21-14 contest at highway 20 rival Skiatook last week.

The Tigers 0-3 but all of those contests were close.  That was also the case when the two teams met last year when Collinsville prevailed 35-28.

The all time series is tied 9-9 but Coweta’s last win was 23-9 back in 1991.

Fort Gibson travels to Sallisaw to start 4A-4 play.  The Tigers are 3-0 and have overcome the loss of their starting quarterback J.R. Singleton to a torn ACL.

The Black Diamonds are 2-1 and are always tough to beat on their home field.

5A battles set for LaFortune Stadium

LaFortune Stadium in Tulsa will be the site for a couple of key games in class 5A as district play starts.

The Bishop Kelley Comets will square off with the Tulsa Memorial Chargers tonight at 7:00 in 5A-3.

Friday night at 7:00, the Pryor Tigers will face the Thomas Edison Eagles in 5A-4.

Bishop Kelley won its first game of the season last week in wild fashion, outlasting Coweta 47-46.

Memorial is 3-0 but has not beaten the Comets since 1996.  Kelley has won the last eight contests, including 27-20 a year ago.

That victory propelled the Comets into the playoffs and denied the Chargers a postseason spot.

Edison and Pryor are both 2-1.  The Tigers come in after a 42-21 loss at powerhouse McAlester last week.

The Eagles lead the overall series 6-5.  Pryor won the last two matchups though in different fashions.

The Tigers won a tight 27-20 contest in 2010 and then rolled to a 41-7 victory in 2011.

Unbeatens Owasso, PC North take road trips

District play opens for most teams in week 4 of the football season, and many strong matchups highlight the schedule for Oklahoma City-metro area squads.

Putnam City North at Tulsa Union

The Panthers are one of only three 6A-I schools to get through non-district play without a defeat. But the competition level steps way forward against a No. 1-ranked Redskins’ squad whose only defeat was in double OT at Cowboys Stadium to Southlake Carroll in Week 1.

Edmond Santa Fe vs Edmond Memorial

The final prong of Edlam features the Wolves, who lost to Edmond North, and the Bulldogs, who beat the Huskies. But they had opposite fortunes a week ago, with Santa Fe holding off Southmoore 34-28 while Memorial surrendered more than 700 yards in a 57-37 loss to Mustang.

Owasso at Norman North

The Timberwolves seek to bounce back from losing last week’s 48-41 thriller against Westmoore. Owasso has been as good as anyone in the state so far, knocking off Broken Arrow, shutting out Muskogee and picking up its first win in 21 years against Jenks last Friday, 7-6.

OCS at Millwood

It’s a showdown between two of Class 2A’s top challengers. Both hosted Tulsa schools a week ago, with OCS pounding Lincoln Christian 38-8 but the Falcons falling 21-6 to Cascia Hall. Millwood lost in last year’s 2A title game while OCS reached the quarterfinals.

Several other good contests will feature Guthrie at McGuinness, Mustang at Edmond North, Carl Albert at Western Heights, Enid at Choctaw

Douglass heads south; Hobart, Hollis to clash

It’s time for district football to begin for most of the state, and this year’s realignment has some new foes facing off for the first time in a while, or even ever.

Douglass at Plainview

The Trojans visit from Oklahoma City in a matchup of teams used to deep playoff pushes. Douglass knocked off Star-Spencer 22-6 last week while Plainview fell 38-24 at Clinton and is off to a bit of a surprising 1-2 start.

Hobart at Hollis

Two of the best squads from the southwest corner of the state bring strong starts to their seasons. Hobart is 2-1, with a lone loss to 4A Cache, while Hollis, the defending Class A champ is a perfect 3-0 after crushing Beaver last week.

Grandfield at Tipton

A strong 8-man test faces a pair of undefeated squads. Neither has been tested, with each scoring lopsided or run-rule wins each time, including Tipton’s 48-8 win against highly-regarded Fox in the season opener. Grandfield reached postseason last year after a five-year playoff drought and is well on its way again.

A few other southwest matchups of interest this week include Northwest Classen at Lawton MacArthur, Blanchard at John Marshall, Lexington at Washington and Apache at Mangum.

Northwest squads getting ready for week 4

Fall is here, and that means football season is heating up even as the temperatures start to drop a bit. Several good matchups around the northwest Oklahoma area are on the slate for week four.

Hooker at Thomas

Thomas is off to its usual strong start, with three lopsided wins in the first three weeks and looking like a challenger for a long run through Class A. Hooker is just 1-2 but played defending Class A champ Hollis tough in a 28-20 loss.

Weatherford at Clinton

Even with the participants sporting just a 3-3 combined record, this game is always one of the biggest in western Oklahoma year in and year out. Clinton scored its first win of the year last week against Plainview, while Weatherford fell to visiting McGuinness.

Waynoka at Cherokee

The Railroaders are out of the gate fast with a 3-0 start to the season but face a stern road test against the defending Class C champions. The Chiefs are dominating again with two run-rule victories and only six points allowed thus far.

Other matchups to watch out for this week include Elgin at Woodward, Merritt at Ringwood and Pond Creek-Hunter at Canton.
