Skiatook football dramatics continue

Skiatook football has had plenty of drama the past two weeks.  The Bulldogs have split a pair one-point games.

Shawnee rallied late in week five for a 22-21 win.  Last week, however, Skiatook reversed that in beating McAlester 27-26.

The Bulldogs, noted for a strong rushing attack, thanks mainly to Kyle McLaughlin, took to the air to edge the Buffaloes.

Quarterback Cameron Hudson had three touchdown passes, the last covering 27 yards to Billy Beyen to put the Bulldogs up 27-20 in the third quarter.

McAlester scored with 1:23 left and decided to go for two after a Skiatook penalty.  The Buffaloes had a bad snap on that attempt though.

McAlester recovered the ensuing onside kick but lost a fumble deep in Bulldog territory with 50 seconds remaining.

Skiatook has another tough test on Thursday when it hosts district 5A-3 leader Tulsa Memorial at 7:00.

5A battles set for LaFortune Stadium

LaFortune Stadium in Tulsa will be the site for a couple of key games in class 5A as district play starts.

The Bishop Kelley Comets will square off with the Tulsa Memorial Chargers tonight at 7:00 in 5A-3.

Friday night at 7:00, the Pryor Tigers will face the Thomas Edison Eagles in 5A-4.

Bishop Kelley won its first game of the season last week in wild fashion, outlasting Coweta 47-46.

Memorial is 3-0 but has not beaten the Comets since 1996.  Kelley has won the last eight contests, including 27-20 a year ago.

That victory propelled the Comets into the playoffs and denied the Chargers a postseason spot.

Edison and Pryor are both 2-1.  The Tigers come in after a 42-21 loss at powerhouse McAlester last week.

The Eagles lead the overall series 6-5.  Pryor won the last two matchups though in different fashions.

The Tigers won a tight 27-20 contest in 2010 and then rolled to a 41-7 victory in 2011.

Jenks Union set to clash again

The two powers of class 6A football for the past two decades are set to hook up again this Friday at 7:05 at the University of Tulsa’s Chapman Stadium.

The Jenks Trojans and Union Redskins will square off in the MidFirst Backyard Bowl.  The regular season game has had that sponsor for about a decade now and traditionally produced some wild finishes.

Last year was no exception as Jenks won 20-16 on a touchdown past in the final minute.  The Trojans then beat the Redskins again three months later, 38-22, in the class 6A title game.

Another good rivalry game in the Tulsa metro area on Friday will feature Thomas Edison and Memorial in the MidTown classic at 7:00 at LaFortune Stadium.

The Eagles won last year 34-19.  The Chargers had taken the previous seven meetings.
