Silo, Leedey claim fall baseball championships

A three-run fifth inning propelled Silo to a 5-3 victory against Roff and the Class A fall baseball state championship Saturday at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

It’s the 10th time Silo has claimed a state baseball championship and their fourth in the fall, this one coming over a deep and talented field of schools, some of whom didn’t even reach the Class A state tournament.

Silo had opened the tournament with a 10-2 triumph over Binger-Oney, the defending champions in both fall and spring baseball. They then knocked off Rattan 8-2 in the semifinals.

In the Class B tournament, perennial contender Leedey reached the top of the mountain for the first time in 26 years, knocking off Red Oak 10-6 in the championship game.

The Bison went 35-2 this season and rolled through a tough state tournament field, beating Fort Cobb-Broxton 2-0 in the semifinals and winning 4-2 over Boswell in the quarterfinals.

Red Oak had won a 12-9, extra-inning game earlier in the day against Asher to reach the finals.

Prep diamond seasons are right around the corner

It still feels like the dead of summer, but competition is right around the corner for fastpitch softball and baseball players across the state. Practice already is underway and games can begin Monday, Aug. 11.
