Warriors host Boomers; northwest filled with solid district matchups

Two of the state’s best teams will face some of their tougher district challenges of the year as week seven of the high school football season rolls in this week.

Woodward at Anadarko

The Boomers are one of the best team on the Anadarko schedule, but it may not mean much given how Anadarko has crushed all comers this year. The Warriors have allowed only one touchdown on the year and oustcored six foes 283-7.

Seiling at Laverne

Seiling lost a tight game to Pond Creek-Hunter last week and now faces the No. 1 team in Class B. Laverne beat up on PCH two weeks ago, as they’ve done with nearly all comers the last couple of seasons.

Coyle at Deer Creek-Lamont

It’s not a misprint. Coyle through five games is averaging 70 points a contest in a 5-0 start. But DCLA has faced a tougher schedule and brings a strong offense into a contest that likely will shake out some district playoff positioning.

Other games to watch in the region include Hennessey at Perry, OCA at Okeene, Balko at Sharon-Mutual, Tahlequah at Enid, Newcastle at Clinton

Laverne, Cherokee flex their muscle in 8-man triumphs

Two big matchups going into last weekend in the 8-man ranks turned in to two strong performances by teams looking to repeat as state champions.

Defending Class B champ Laverne scored on its first seven possessions and got things totally under control, rolling to a 52-16 win against Pond Creek-Hunter.

And the defending Class C champions Cherokee had far too much for third-ranked Shattuck, racing out to a 42-14 triumph to solidify their spot atop the class.

Douglass heads south; Hobart, Hollis to clash

It’s time for district football to begin for most of the state, and this year’s realignment has some new foes facing off for the first time in a while, or even ever.

Douglass at Plainview

The Trojans visit from Oklahoma City in a matchup of teams used to deep playoff pushes. Douglass knocked off Star-Spencer 22-6 last week while Plainview fell 38-24 at Clinton and is off to a bit of a surprising 1-2 start.

Hobart at Hollis

Two of the best squads from the southwest corner of the state bring strong starts to their seasons. Hobart is 2-1, with a lone loss to 4A Cache, while Hollis, the defending Class A champ is a perfect 3-0 after crushing Beaver last week.

Grandfield at Tipton

A strong 8-man test faces a pair of undefeated squads. Neither has been tested, with each scoring lopsided or run-rule wins each time, including Tipton’s 48-8 win against highly-regarded Fox in the season opener. Grandfield reached postseason last year after a five-year playoff drought and is well on its way again.

A few other southwest matchups of interest this week include Northwest Classen at Lawton MacArthur, Blanchard at John Marshall, Lexington at Washington and Apache at Mangum.

Week 1 games to watch: Boomers visit Kingfisher; strong 8-man openers

The northwest corner of the state is home to many strong small-school and most of the top 8-man programs, ready to get back after it after a hot few weeks of practice.

The first week has a number of strong matchups, starting with a 3A contender and a climbing power in 4A meeting in a non-district meeting.
