Stillwater gets another test; Powerful offenses clash in Norman

Midwest City found itself in a quick 14-point hole less than halfway through the first quarter Friday at Stillwater. But the Bombers kept plugging away, eventually battling back for a 36-27 triumph that keeps them near the top of the chase in Class 6A-II.

In 6A-I, most of the results went according to form, save a huge win for Yukon, which upset Edmond Memorial 21-20 for the biggest win thus far for the Millers this season.

Perhaps the wildest game of the week was in Edmond, where Deer Creek outlasted McGuinness in triple overtime 41-40 to pick up a crucial district victory.

In other 5A matchups, Shawnee survived a scare on the road at Skiatook 22-21 while Carl Albert and Guthrie rolled to easy wins.

Unbeatens Owasso, PC North take road trips

District play opens for most teams in week 4 of the football season, and many strong matchups highlight the schedule for Oklahoma City-metro area squads.

Putnam City North at Tulsa Union

The Panthers are one of only three 6A-I schools to get through non-district play without a defeat. But the competition level steps way forward against a No. 1-ranked Redskins’ squad whose only defeat was in double OT at Cowboys Stadium to Southlake Carroll in Week 1.

Edmond Santa Fe vs Edmond Memorial

The final prong of Edlam features the Wolves, who lost to Edmond North, and the Bulldogs, who beat the Huskies. But they had opposite fortunes a week ago, with Santa Fe holding off Southmoore 34-28 while Memorial surrendered more than 700 yards in a 57-37 loss to Mustang.

Owasso at Norman North

The Timberwolves seek to bounce back from losing last week’s 48-41 thriller against Westmoore. Owasso has been as good as anyone in the state so far, knocking off Broken Arrow, shutting out Muskogee and picking up its first win in 21 years against Jenks last Friday, 7-6.

OCS at Millwood

It’s a showdown between two of Class 2A’s top challengers. Both hosted Tulsa schools a week ago, with OCS pounding Lincoln Christian 38-8 but the Falcons falling 21-6 to Cascia Hall. Millwood lost in last year’s 2A title game while OCS reached the quarterfinals.

Several other good contests will feature Guthrie at McGuinness, Mustang at Edmond North, Carl Albert at Western Heights, Enid at Choctaw

Norman North, Westmoore to collide

It’s the final week of non-district play in most Oklahoma football districts, and central Oklahoma has several intriguing matchups.

Norman North at Westmoore

Perhaps the biggest challengers to the Jenks-Union stranglehold on 6A football clash at Moore Schools Stadium. Both bring prolific offenses, North led by QB John Kolar and RB Quan Hogan and the Jaguars with a powerful receiving crew catching passes from veteran QB Bryson Lee.

Cascia Hall at Millwood

The Falcons scored a huge win in the Soul Bowl Saturday against Douglass but continue a tough non-district slate against a 4A power from Tulsa. The Commandos rallied in the second half to take down 6A Bartlesville last week.

Mustang at Edmond Memorial

Nobody has played better defense than the Bulldogs, who have scored shutouts of Southmoore and Edmond North to rise up the ranks of 6A-I. They’ll get a test from a powerful Mustang offense. The Broncos were surprised by Stillwater 35-26 last week.

The area has many other strong contests this week, including Putnam City North at Choctaw, Del City at Midwest City, Southmoore at Edmond Santa Fe and Talihina at Christian Heritage.
