Stillwater gets another test; Powerful offenses clash in Norman

Midwest City found itself in a quick 14-point hole less than halfway through the first quarter Friday at Stillwater. But the Bombers kept plugging away, eventually battling back for a 36-27 triumph that keeps them near the top of the chase in Class 6A-II.

In 6A-I, most of the results went according to form, save a huge win for Yukon, which upset Edmond Memorial 21-20 for the biggest win thus far for the Millers this season.

Perhaps the wildest game of the week was in Edmond, where Deer Creek outlasted McGuinness in triple overtime 41-40 to pick up a crucial district victory.

In other 5A matchups, Shawnee survived a scare on the road at Skiatook 22-21 while Carl Albert and Guthrie rolled to easy wins.

East squads flex muscle, OCS keeps rolling

Owasso and Tulsa Union came to the OKC area to face a strong Norman North team and an undefeated Putnam City North squad, respectively.

And they had enjoyable rides home, after the Rams jumped out to a 28-0 lead and rolled 45-20, while Union pummeled the Panthers 63-6.

In Class 6A-I, Mustang scored a big win at Edmond North, 34-20, while unbeaten Westmoore barely stayed that way, with Norman pushing the Jaguars to overtime before Westmoore picked up a 34-28 triumph. Also getting a big win was Edmond Memorial, which held off Edmond Santa Fe 40-33.

Also scoring one of the biggest wins of the week was Oklahoma Christian School, which took down Millwood 30-12.

Norman North, Westmoore to collide

It’s the final week of non-district play in most Oklahoma football districts, and central Oklahoma has several intriguing matchups.

Norman North at Westmoore

Perhaps the biggest challengers to the Jenks-Union stranglehold on 6A football clash at Moore Schools Stadium. Both bring prolific offenses, North led by QB John Kolar and RB Quan Hogan and the Jaguars with a powerful receiving crew catching passes from veteran QB Bryson Lee.

Cascia Hall at Millwood

The Falcons scored a huge win in the Soul Bowl Saturday against Douglass but continue a tough non-district slate against a 4A power from Tulsa. The Commandos rallied in the second half to take down 6A Bartlesville last week.

Mustang at Edmond Memorial

Nobody has played better defense than the Bulldogs, who have scored shutouts of Southmoore and Edmond North to rise up the ranks of 6A-I. They’ll get a test from a powerful Mustang offense. The Broncos were surprised by Stillwater 35-26 last week.

The area has many other strong contests this week, including Putnam City North at Choctaw, Del City at Midwest City, Southmoore at Edmond Santa Fe and Talihina at Christian Heritage.

Westmoore, Edmond Memorial off to 2-0 starts

Westmoore again claimed the city championship in Moore, knocking off Southmoore 20-7 as part of a busy second week  of football in the Oklahoma City metro area.

Also scoring a strong win in Class 6A-I was Edmond Memorial, which knocked off Edmond North 35-0 behind Warren Wand’s running and a stifling defense. The Bulldogs are out to a 2-0 start.

Perhaps the most surprising of several big wins for 6A-II squads came from Stillwater, which traveled to Mustang and scored a 35-26 victory behind a 242-yard rushing performance from Cameron Mayberry.

Also scoring impressive victories were Midwest City, which shut down crosstown rival Carl Albert in an 18-0 victory and Choctaw, which crushed Putnam City 34-3.

Saturday’s annual Soul Bowl saw Millwood take down Douglass for a second straight year, with Andre Clanton’s late sce giving the Falcons a 20-14 victory.

Battle of Midwest City set for week two

It’s another week for big rivalry games in central Oklahoma in week two of the high school football season. Here are a few favorites.

Midwest City at Carl Albert

It’s a rare treat for football fans in the east metro as Midwest City’s two schools hook up for the first time in many years. The Bombers are stinging from a 17-12 loss to Booker T. Washington last week, while the Titans rolled against El Reno 48-14.

Southmoore vs Westmoore

The Jaguars looked the part of a 6A Division I challenger by rolling past Moore 49-20 in their opener. Southmoore struggled to get much going offensively and fell 20-0 to Edmond Memorial. But this is quickly growing to be a big rivalry contest and will have both teams’ attention.

Millwood at Douglass

The Trojans look like a big contender in Class 3A and started with a dominating 75-0 victory against Northeast last weekend. Millwood got a measure of revenge on Star-Spencer in a 36-24 victory, avenging a loss to Star in the All-City preview two weeks ago. Douglass’ only regular-season loss last year came at Millwood, 31-12.

Many other good games dot the schedule during week two, including Deer Creek at Norman, OCS at Metro Christian, Yukon at Norman North and Edmond Memorial vs Edmond North.

New coaches draw tough assignments in 6A-1

The split of Class 6A football has put 12 westside schools into a tough challenge, thrown into competition not just with each other but also the four largest schools in the state – east-siders Broken Arrow, Owasso and powerhouses in Jenks and Union.

Making the challenge tougher at a number of schools are several coaching changes. Five of the 12 6A-1 squads have new head coaches since last season, including all three of the Moore Public Schools programs.
